Any one know when Microsoft will release the next version?
Athlon now has released 64 bit chips when will microsoft
release a windows to handle them?

doesn't the current version work? I thought the 64 was compatible with all
32 bit s/w

The Athlon 64 is 32Bit and 64Bit OS compatible. Microsoft is working on the
64Bit version of Windows XP now. No date for release yet.

It's already been released for the Intel Itanium version of the 64 Bit chip.
Currently, the only way to get the 64 Bit version is when you order a system
with a 64Bit chipset.

The Athlon version is still in beta. Here is the latest article I could find
on it's progress.

There are two different questions here: next version and 64-bit
support.

The next version of Windows, code-named "Longhorn," doesn't have
an official announced release date, but estimates are that it
will be released sometime in 2005.

A Windows XP version with support for 64-bit processors already
exists for the Intel Itanium chip. A similar version, but for the
64-bit AMD Athlon chip, is currently in beta test, and is
probably not too far from being released.

There are two variants of Athlon 64 - one also supports 32 bit code and
will run regular Windows XP 32 bit. The other has only AMD's 64 bit
code set (different from the Intel one used in current XP 64). I
understand that a version of Windows for that is in development, but
have no idea on time scale
