Pan is a newsreader, loosely based on Agent and Gravity,
which attempts to be pleasant to use for new and advanced
users alike.

It has all the typical features found in newsreaders
and also supports offline newsreading, sophisticated filtering,
multiple connections, and a number of extra features for power
users and alt.binaries

Packages are available for several different Linux distributions
and Windows at ....

http://pan.rebelbase.com/download/

Installation under Debian GNU/Linux is simple ....

# apt-get install pan

One feature of Pan that I currently like very much
is the ability to simply and quickly delete individual
posts or entire threads with a single press of the DELETE key ....

This feature has been particularly helpful for me recently
while reading alt.comp.freeware ....

I think I recall that 40Tude Dialog also has this feature,
but don't remember for sure as it's
been a while since I've used it ....

Give me a hint as to how I install this software for Windows XP
and I might consider it.

I have tried installing using the following advice at this url
without success.

Cousin Saxman ....

The instructions in the link you posted for installing
Pan under Windows seem fairly straight-forward, but
as we know what seems and what is can often
be totally different matters ....

I'm using Pan under Debian GNU/Linux, and haven't
tried it under Windows myself ....

Maybe trying a different version of the Gtk Runtime
from the one you chose might work ....

Did you download the Gtk runtime from the same site
that has the instructions or already have one installed ?

I've used a few of Gtk-based applications under
Win98 and seem to remember that I had to add
the path to the Gtk runtime bin folder to the
path environment variable before some of them
would work ....

Maybe you could find some WinXP Pan users
in the news group news.software.newsreaders
that might offer first hand advice ....

Sorry for my clueless-ness with regard
to installation of the program under Windows ....

http://pan.rebelbase.com/download/releases/0.96/WINDOWS/

1. download and run GTK-Runtime-Environment-2.2.4.1.exe from
http://pan.rebelbase.com/download/releases/0.96/WINDOWS/gtk_for_windows/

2. download run run gtk+-2.8.15-setup.zip from
http://pan.rebelbase.com/download/releases/0.96/WINDOWS/gtk_for_windows/
(uninstall any previous releases of gtk you might have -- probably unlikely)

3. download pan.exe and pcre3.dll from
http://pan.rebelbase.com/download/releases/0.96/WINDOWS/
into a directory on your hard drive

4. ** Important ** Reboot your machine

5. run pan.exe from the directory in step 3 above.

that's it.

Uninstallation was done automatically.

This worked fine.

It looks neat. I would not have set it up without your help.

Do you use Pan as your main newsreader?
