Newsgroup shows red when messages are posted

My old Compaq Presario (running WindowsME) used to change the color of the
newsgroup from black to red when I had posted a new message in that
newsgroup, or maybe it was when a reply was made to my post?
I'm not talking about the messages in the view pane. I have a rule that
makes my messages appear blue and that works fine.
What I'm talking about is the changing color of the actual name of the
newsgroup (i.e.: microsoft.public.outlook.general) located in the "Folders"
window.
That old computer finally died and I got a new emachine that runs WindowsXP.
I loaded the same program (Office 2000 suite) which is where Outlook lives
(I think) onto the new machine but now the newsgroup names don't change
color. What's wrong? Is there a rule that might have been on my older
computer?

You really need to post this in an Outlook Express newsgroup, since this is
probably the default newsreader in your system.

Microsoft Outlook does not include a newsreader, or newsreader
functionality. It uses whatever the default Windows newsreader is.
Evidently in your case, this is Outlook Express. Don't believe me? Open
Outlook Express stand-alone, and you will see all the servers and newsgroups
you thought you subscribed to from within Microsoft Outlook in the Folder
list. When you access newsreader functionality from within Microsoft
Outlook, it calls an instance of Outlook Express in "newsonly" mode, and
puts "Outlook Newsreader" at the top of the Folder list.

But as far as the newsgroup name showing up in red if there are new messages
in the threads you have set watches on...

In every version of Outlook Express I've used, this function has always been
a hit or miss thing anyway. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.
I have no explanation of why, only that it sometimes works, and sometimes
doesn't.

Hi SF,

Donald's answer is very precise. If there are new posts on the thread you have
set watch on (a glass icon), then the newsgroup name in the name list in OE will
turn to be red. You can customize the color in

OE -> Options -> Read -> "Highlight watched messages:" list. It is set as Red by
default.

If you have any further concerns regarding this issue, please feel free to post
back. Also, since this is a pure Outlook Express question, you are suggested to
submit your question in OutlookExpress newsgroup. The reason why we
recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most qualified pool of
respondents, and other partners who read the newsgroups regularly can either
share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us. Thank you for your
understanding.

Thank you, Pat.
I never made the association that it is the "Watched" option that changes
the color.
Thanks for clearing that all up.
