News Service

Heather

Hey all.....Rogers has decided (in its infinite stupidity) to cancel Usenet
access, stating that it is passe and not many people use it. Idiots!!

I have kvetched a few times, but fully expect I will be accessing these 2
groups via Google tomorrow.

Any suggestions for a good news service that is inexpensive or free?? They
all seem to be at least $10/month and Rogers won't deduct that, of course.

Kurt....has Sympatico made any rumbles about doing the same thing? I may
just change over, but that is my least favourite solution. Ted Rogers is
such a jerk. I may just switch my cellphones over to Bell as well. Can't
do much about the TV cable service....but for $50/month, I expect to be able
to get news groups.

Thanks....Heather

A better forum for that is can.internet.highspeed.

They're talking about it there.

Thanks.....I will find that. Any hope for us?

I don't think so - we gave it our best shot.

Oh - you mean about Rogers and usenet. Um, no, it looks like it's
final.

some people don't like google groups and/or find that conventional
usenet usage is difficult with google groups... i seem to recall
threaded view is not the default and there may be some issues with quote
placement (although some folks aren't always careful about that to begin
with)...

searched my bookmarks and came up with this
http://www.disenter.com/index.php

and of course there's always google
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=free usenet servers
Kurt....has Sympatico made any rumbles about doing the same thing?

not to my knowledge, but i really don't pay much attention to email from
sympatico - it always seems to be some kind of advertisement for
new/better services...

it kinda doesn't surprise me that rogers would get rid of it, though...
it is old technology and most of the internet users today seem to prefer
web forums (never mind the fact that usenet is superior to web forums)...

i think i know the one you're talking about... it changed it's name a
couple years ago to individual.net and now is a fee-based service...

That is the one that Rogers was/is using. It is $9.95 Cdn/mo. They are
steering us all to that one.

Thanks....Heather

Many thanks Kurt.....I am trying to access via that free one, but I think
Rogers is stopping it. I will try again in the morning.

Hmm, here it is almost 2 hours past the deadline and I am still on Usenet.
I read a lot of the complaints on Google and there seems to be some cheaper
ISP's. But changing my ISP is not high on my list...too many hassles.

Web Forums.....ptui!! I have to moderate one connected with a Genealogy
List I run and I detest them. I usually tell the person asking the question
to join my List. (G)

Night.....Heather

that's right. I used/use news.individual.net since years. The free
changed to fee (10 Euro/year NOT month) about 1 year ago. So far IMO the
fee is cheap enough for a good newsserver. And news.individual.net was/
is one, IMHO. Perhaps Heather decide this way?

individual.net

http://news.individual.net/

Registration required. Price 10 euros a year. No binaries. No sex
groups. No nonsense. This is a very dependable
server for text.

newsgate. xprivat.org

http://www.x-privat.org/international.php

Registration required. Price 6 Euros a year. Text and some binaries.
This server is faster than individual.net but may
lack some groups. Its binary completion should not be depended upon.

sunsite.dk

http://dotsrc.org/usenet/

Free text only, registration required. This server now only carries the
comp groups.

news.aioe

http://news.aioe.org/

No registration required. Free server. Text only and it is slow as
molasses. You get what you pay for. Limit of 25 posts
per day.

If you want the level of service that comes with a paid service I would
recommend Octanews.

15 gigabytes 8 US $12.95

Befunge Sudoku

University of Berlin run a news server, used to be free, now
$10 a year or something close. Quite a few people I know use
it.
It's had a couple of techy glitches this last couple of weeks
but is generally very good.
new.individual.net iirc, but you'd need to get the Berlin Uni
webpages to register anyway

Oh, I thought it was Berlin.
mmm - in fact I still do.
No longer free, but still cheap

Sorry for the top post, but didn't want to mess up your neat post. (G)

I am surprised that I am still able to get news groups today....the deadline
was yesterday, but I am crossing my fingers. Perhaps Ted Rogers realized he
had ticked off more customers than he thought he would.

And thanks for the info, James & Befunge.....I used to use the
Individual.net one but my only problem with it is that you can't munge your
address. I had checked into that one first. Still no munging.

Cheers.....Living on Borrowed Usenet Time....lol

I also used it for many years till it went to a pay one. It was a devil to
figure out how to pay for it from Canada.

However, my only beef with it is that you cannot munge your From Address.
If they changed that rule, I would use them in a heartbeat!!

But so far, I am still up and running with Rogers, but for how long I do not
know.

I only need text.....not binaries. So I may just go for this one.

Thanks....Heather

I found it wouldn't carry to the same thread depth as the MS servers, so
while I usually used it news.individual.net, I kept msnews.microsoft.com
ready for reading the occassional *really* long thread. Most of the time it
just wasn't an issue though.

Trying out Google Groups.....Rogers has terminated Usenet as of 2 pm.
I may look into news.individual.net.

I will also switch ISP's unless they change the above, but I doubt it.

What a pain in the posterior!!

Cheers....Figgs
