Hi,
I want to get a news reader, as I use the services regularly. What is a good reader? I looked in
Google an found Omea Reader which needs NET Framework ver 1.1 installed 1st. Is NET Framework 1.1
difficult to install? Or am I on a wrong tangent with Omea Reader? Please let me know what most of you
use and how it is installed. Will appreciate any help you give.
Thank You
Daj

As with so many software categories, what newsreader is "best"
depends on personal taste. They all have different interfaces and
different feature sets. If your newsreader has a feature you use
a lot and it's not in my newsreader, then yours is better for
you. But if mine has a feature I use a lot that yours doesn't
have, then mine is better for me.

Because Outlook Express comes with Windows, it's probably the
most common choice by far. I've tried several different
newsreaders, and I keep coming back to Outlook Express, which I
like the best.

But you shouldn't make a decision like this based on a popularity
contest. It doesn't matter what I like best or what others here
like best. Choose the one *you* like best and which best meets
*your* needs. Because most newsreaders are either freeware or
shareware, it's easy to try several and make your own evaluation.

Look for a reader called Super Gravity - it's free, has worked great for
years, and doesn't suffer from the Outlook Express flaws of being an
email program adapted to do Usenet.

Free Agent (www.forteinc.com/agent). Free Agent is a free version of
Agent. Agent has more features, but Free Agent is quite usable. If you
like it, you may want to pay the low fee for fully functional Agent.

Mozilla Thunderbird (www.mozilla.org/thunderbird). Free, open-source
email and usenet client.

I'm assuming you mean newsgroup reader.
Go to www.download.com
and search for "newsgroup"
Should have several programs for accessing newsgroups.

Just fyi, a program that reads and writes newsgroup messages is
commonly referred to as a "newsreader."

For example, I'm running Outlook Express in news-only mode at the
moment and if I look at its title bar, it reads "Microsoft
Outlook Newsreader."

Hi

My suggestion:

Mozilla Thunderbird
http://www.mozilla.org/thunderbird

and configure it like this (in the menu):

View/Threads/Threads with Unread

(for the threads with unread posts, it will still show the read posts
in it, I just love that configuration/view :-)

Xnews is free and is fairly easy to use.

For help and support go to news.software.readers and you will find most
any question answered.

Hint: As with any newsgroup, check the archives before posting a
question there, you'll very likely find the question has already been
asked and answered.

For peer support newsgroups like this one I suggest OE, for binary
newsgroups, Agent is one of the best. See my signature for link to more
suggestions.

Outlook Express will do an adequate job; make a News account in its
Tools - Accounts, to use the server for these microsoft groups
msnews.microsoft.com. No logon is needed. Get the list of groups,
select and subscribe to those you want, then initially set its Options -
Read to get 1000 headers at a time (so as not to be overwhelmed). Once
you have some, you can uncheck that and on each occasion get the ones
that have come in since last time.

You may want to mark up headers and only then get the bodies (depends a
lot on whether you have broadband). That is a bit clumsy in OE. For
myself, I use Forte Agent (www.forteinc.com) which has a quite adequate
free version (the full version does mail as well and useful things like
filtering and crosspost control, but you might well not want those)
