News - Outlook 2003

JBL

Each time I go to the Internet properties and set the
program Outlook Express, I can then attach a "News" item
to the Menu bar. However, when I close out and retry,
all I get is a Windows Explorer listing of the following
directory:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\SYSTEM\MSMAPI\1033

Then, If I repeat the steps above again, the newsreader
will open once, and then after that, I will get the
Windows Explorer listing of the path above. Is this a
bug? It seems that Outlook 2003 can't remember where
it's newsreader is once you set it? Thanks for any
suggestions.

Make sure that in OE the program is not set as the default news reader. That
setting should only be made in Control Panel, not OE.

Russ,

When I go to the control panel and select "Set Program
Access and Defaults", there is no option for OE to be set
as the news reader. There is an option to make it the
default mail client, but we don't want that right?

Do you mean going into the Internet Options and making
sure that OE is selected as the News reader?

Also, when OE starts (as the Outlook News Reader) it
always asks if I want to make it (the Outlook News
Reader) the default, and when I click "No", I don't seem
to have a problem. When I click "Yes", to make it the
default, that's when I have the issue and I have to reset
everything.

That seems to contradict what you are saying, or my
system has a mind of it's own, which is entirely
possible. Can you or anyone else please comment?

Thanks!

It does not contradict what I said. I told you NOT to set OE as the default
in the program--only in Control Panel.
