Hello,

I am running XP Pro SP1 and using a Host file to block ads and spyware.
My DNS Client service is

turned off as recommended for host file usage.
I am running eDexter as the local HTTP server (for 127.0.0.1 requests)

I am connected to the Internet via a dial up account from AT&T.

Sometimes I notice that all of a sudden I cannot reach any sites at all,
I get the "xxxx could

not be found, check the name and try again" errors even when I am at
say, Amazon and I click to

another amazon page. Very frustrating. Sometimes If I wait long enough
and then retry, the site

will be found and loaded. This also happens regularly with my connecting
to the POP mail servers.

The only thing that seems to clear up the problem (at least temporarily)
is to disconnect and

reconnect.

Does this sound like a DNS server issue or some problem with my setup?

Most of the time I can browse and surf fine but when things grind to a
halt it is most

frustrating.

Thanks in advance for any help.

There have been a couple updates that have come out recently.
You might want to check some of the XP updates out. I
haven't looked at them in regards to Win2K yet, but I noticed
I was having some problems recently but they seem to have
been related to Microsoft News Servers and Outlook Express.

Outlook Express crashed twice on me today and that's never
happened in the past unless I disconnected the networking
cable.

Some of the updates today dealt with Outlook Express.

Don't know that this will help. The only other thing I can
think of is that you have a dirty connection. Is it a phone
line that has a phone attached? If so, pick up the phone,
dial one number into other than 0 and sit back and listen
carefully to see if you can hear any background noise or
clicking. If it rained in your area, its possible that a phone
switch could have gotten wet and could be shorting out,
but this type of thing is very rare. It's happened to me
on new installations of phone lines 3 times in the last
year though.

Hope that helps.
