News Group Moderator

I took the following out of a long thread on another subject.
1. I think it is important enough to have its own thread.
2. I am looking for suggestions to implement the answer in Outlook Express
via AOL

Question: Doesn't this news group have a moderator? A few angry lunatics
are allowed to jump in wherever they want to. On all the other news groups
that I have visited they are quickly blocked by a moderator.

Answer: Your best moderator would be the "KILL FILE" or whatever your
particular email/newsreader program calls it.

What does a moderator have to do with Outlook Express and aol?

What's your point?

Do you have a real question?

So go visit one of those other newsgroups then.

OK. Here's the question. Where do I get a "kill file" to keep out trolls,
lunatics, and other assorted aggressive posters? Are there any references
on how to implement a file of this sort? I am using Outlook Express as my
news reader and AOL as my ISP.

No there's no moderator. Posters are blocked only if the violate the
terms of usage as defined by the server's owner, Microsoft. A few
ill-mannered words aren't justification. If you really want to be
baby-sat, stick to the moderated newsgroups.

Answer: Your best moderator would be the "KILL FILE" or whatever your

Correct. If you can't trust yourself not to read posts from people you
dislike, simply block them so that you won't see them.

Select a message from the offending poster and go to Message/Block Sender.

See Alias' reply.

The term "killfile" is not a physical file. It is a terminology that represents the way any
News Client (Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger, Mozilla Thunderbird, Agent, MicroPlanet
Gravity, yada, yada) has the ability to remember a list of those "posters" you want to
block. That filet works off the posters handle or email address or both.

In Outlook Express you would highlight the offending poster's post then go to the Pull Down
menu; Message --> Block Sender.

Phill,

How will you know the so called "trolls, lunatics, and other assorted
aggressive posters"? You will need to be one to know them!

1.How do I "simply block them"? That's my question. Why should you care? If you don't know how to do it, do you have any suggestions on where to look other than going through a few thousand irrelevant hits on GOOGLE
2. My children use this computer as well as I. I am more concerned about them becoming enraged for an evening by these insane attack posts than the filthy language.
3.Do you consider the following to be simply "A few ill-mannered words "
your needle dick -- stick up your ass -- **** you, slime ball
4.Then a few responded to a post suggesting that I get a KILL FILE as follows.
4.1 - "Yes, the virtual killfile is a budding serial killers best friend! Only those that torture and killed small animals as kids need to use one."
4.2 "When I get mad and I get pissed
I take out a pen and write out a list
Of all the people who won't be missed
You've made my shit list"
What do think this guy means by "won't be missed"?
5. I do not need a baby sitter. I need the real police to get these people put away in an insane asylum. Have you ever had the pleasure of working with someone like that? Well I have. However, he ended up in jail rather than an insane asylum.
Now will you tell me how I can simply block them?

When the Police arrive ask them in case they are familiar with Outlaw
Express.
Otherwise read the Help.

You already have it.

"Killfile" isn't the term used in Outlook Express, but most of us call it
that anyway. In Outlook Express, go to Message | Block Sender.

Now before you use that new found knowledge, see the message quoted below or
look back for yourself to one of the threads where you were offended and see
that kurttrail gave you the information you are asking for before you
started this rant thread. Notice the BLOCK SENDER reference.
This is Usenet, learn to roll with the punches and you will learn from the
experience. Kurt is abrasive, but certainly one not to dismiss. I don't
agree with him on very much, but he makes you think, and this is one of the
real reasons I love working the newsgroups.
BTW, most of your posts if this newsgroup was strictly moderated would have
been off topic and never been allowed in the first place.

Thanks. It certainly will help. I guess it is my fault as well but
I get angry and respond. Now I will look for a KILL FILE or its
equivalent in Outlook Express.
Thanks again
