itthe 20G hard drive failed and I have installed a new 20G drive, but I
cannot get it to install the OS. The Bios settings are correct, but I cannot
get windows to install. The new disk was formatted for me when I bought.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

- Does the BIOS recognise the disk?
- Does it report it as a 20 GByte disk?
- How exactly are you trying to install Windows?
- How far do you get?
- What messages do you see on the screen?

THE bios recognizes the disk Correctly. I have the CD-Rom as the 1st boot device.
I will start the machine.it will run past the opening text on the screen and
stop. If I use the resource cd (drivers) it will prompt for boot from Hard
disk or Cd-rom, I chose CD-Rom and it asks if I want to start in dos, if i
select yes, the screen goes to a prompt, CSD:\ and stops. There are no other
choices except a couple of diagnostiics which do nothing.. Also my other
machine is now asking for an Aminisrtors password, even when I start in Safe
Mode it still asks for the password. 2 problems for the price of one. It is a
dell p4 1.61.Ghz.

What type of CD do you use? Is it a WinXP installation CD, or is
it a Dell driver or recovery CD? Some Dell machines are delivered
with a recovery partition on the hard disk instead of a WinXP
installation CD. If your old hard disk is toast then you need to ask
Dell how to reload Windows.

I believe that under WinXP HOme you can log on as Administrator
in Safe Mode with a blank password. I don't like this approach,
same as I would never have a car with just one set of keys, for
obvious reasons. Two sets of keys and two Administrator
accounts is my minimum.

Use the XP setup CD to wipe the current partition(s), then install new
partition. It will format it automatically in adding the new partition.

Follow what Jonny said and make sure the CD is listed as the first boot
device and the only coice you make is to "press the any key to boot from the
CD".
Delete all current partitions and create one new one since that drive is so
small.

If this is a laptop, and if you got the new drive from Dell, perhaps it has
a recovery partition on it. If so, the fine manual tells you how to access
the recovery partition so as to load XP into the main partition.

If whomever you bought the disk from installed XP then it should boot after
a fashion. I would ask the seller of the disk exactly what "formatted"
means. Frankly, it seems to me that they owe you help in getting this disk
going.

You only use the resource CD after you have made a fresh installation of XP.
This CD contains customized drivers for your computer to replace those found
in generic XP installations.

The reasoning for the prior reply is that the PC that contained the newer
hard drive where it was partitioned and formatted may have a different bios
interpretation of the hard drive CHS and landing zone. The OPs PC may
interpret this as gibberish as a result.

Always partition and format on the platform you intend to use a hard drive,
it may save you some grief. If not immediate, can be down the road when the
filesystem table is a little off.
