Hello --

My sister got a new puter with XP and is
asking for my help -- but I'm used to 98 and/or
ME. I'm trying to figure out how to make an
emergency boot disk but . . . arrggghhh !!! . . .
she doesn't have a floppy drive!!!!!

But, she does have a R/W CD drive. Can I make
an emergency CD boot ????

I'm worried about what drives the puter looks
at when booting up . . . how do I tell it where
to look? On 98 I just hold down the delete key
to get into Setup and can tell it where to look.
How do I do it on XP???

Thanks

An emergency boot disk is not really necessary for WindowsXP because the CD is bootable, but if you want to make one, go to 'My Computer', then right click '3.5" disk' and select 'Format'. There will be an option to create a startup disk. But if you don't have a floppy drive, you won't be able to do this. Don't worry though, you don't really need one.

How you get access to the "Setup" is not part of the Windows version. It is
a function of what BIOS chip is on the motherboard. You need the PC owners
manual to determine if "Del" or "F1" or "F2" or "Ctrl+Alt+S", etc. is used
to access the System Setup (BIOS).

Thank you both for your responses. Guess
I didn't "really" explain my problem here.

My sister got a "good deal" on her new
puter -- a CD RW but no 3.5 -- and no
CD's with software :(( Is there a way I
can create a boot CD with her R/W??? What
do I need to copy?? I'm having a hard time
finding the info at MS -- and I'm just worried
about a problem happening in the future !!!

Thanks again !!!

what value would a boot cd be if she has no operating
system installation cd?
the best way would be to use an imaging program, such as
ghost or acronis, and image the c: drive to cds or a
slave hard drive.both programs have the option of making
a boot cd to install the image if problems occur.

Elizabeth,

Please ensure that your sister is actually licensed to use Windows XP on her
new computer. She must have been supplied with either a COA (Certificate of
Authenticity) or a full copy of Windows XP and the appropriate yellow label
with the product key.
Please check
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/default.aspx
to see that she actually owns a license to use Windows XP.
