Newbie networker

I have a desktop and laptop which have been happily networked for a couple of
years (sorted out by a friend for me). Following the replacement of the
desktop's hard drive recently, I have been trying to set the network up
again. Sadly, the original friend is no longer with us to help.

I've got a router which is connected by wire to the desktop and wirelessly
to the laptop. Both machines can connect to the Internet with no problem, but
I can't get them to talk to each other to share files. I've tried following
all sorts of instructions using both the Windows Wizards and instructions on
the Microsoft site but they all seem to be for wired or wireless, not a
hybrid mixture and, needless to say, I can't get things to work.

Please could someone point me in the direction of a solution (preferably
idiot-proof).

Many thanks.

Do you have firewalls running on the machines and if so have you allowed
sharing through them, could be that the firewalls are blocking them.

Ah, that's a thought. I've got Norton Internet Security installed on both
computers. I've never delved into this so don't know how to change any
settings. I'll have a look. Thank you for the suggestion tho' I don't know if
I have the knowledge to make this work even with this idea.

Hopefully someone else will be able to help you there as I don't have
Norton anything on here and wouldn't if you paid me <g>

Sorry but I read about too many problems with people running Norton so
won't touch it and have no experience with it.
