I'm very new to XP after being on ME and 98 for years.

When I try to run ScanDisc, i get a message that my machine has to be
re-started. How in the heck am I going to be able to set this up to
run automatically overnight?

Use the "scheduled task" wizard.

Go to Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Scheduled Tasks

Give this a try

Scandisc doesnt appear in the list of prgrams. Am I missing something?
XP really has me scratching my head sometimes.

Scan disk doesn't take long to do manually.
Go to Windows Help, type in SCAN DISK and follow
the instructions.

There is no Scandisk in XP, it's CHKDSK.

There is no Scandisk in XP. The XP "equivalent" is called chkdsk.

Are you planning on running this every night? Why? It's way
overkill.

i do hi octane graphics for print. we deal in some extremely huge
files. 500 mb is routine; over a gig is not uncommon. When i ran ME, i
found the system ran a lot better if it ran scandisc every night and
then de-fragged every night immediately afterwards. sometimes it
wouldnt de-frag if it wasnt scandisc'd first.

so i was trying to set up a similar situation with my new box. but i
cant figure out a way to automate either of these tasks. I mean even
if i was to set them up to run once a week on the weekends, i still
cant find them in the scheduled task programs.

doh! spoke too soon. that doesnt appear on the "add scheduled
programs" list either.

No it won't appear in that list. You could browse for it, it's located
in windows\system32 but if the disk you want checked/repaired is the
system disk I doubt you'll have success running it as a scheduled task.
You'd have to figure out a way to pass a "Y" keystroke to the utility
when it asks if you want to run it at next boot, and then you'll have to
schedule a seperate task for the reboot to take place afterwards.

Why do you want to do this anyway? It only takes a minute or two to run
a disk check unless you are specifying the /R to scan for bad blocks,
which is not something you want or need to do every day.

If you are using NTFS there is really no need to check the disk daily.
It is a very robust file system compared to FAT file systems and even
when inconsistencies develop it rarely affect system performance.
