Recently updated to SP2. Now my Linksys BB router is
sporadically dropping it's connection. It's loses it's IP
and will re-assign. The only solution is to cycle the
power on the router. Replaced all cables, replaced router,
assigned proper MTU. Ruled out the cable modem as the
source. Problem non-existent before the SP2 load. Any idea??

How does/did sp2 affect your router? sp2 didn't install on IT! Your
problem is in your sp2 infected computer - not in your router.

Ron,

if the router misbehaves, the problem is most likely in the
router. First thing you have to do is make sure that the router
has the latest firmware installed.

Do you have any high loads running like peer-to-peer file
sharing or Internet gaming? In that case you may have to get a
higher-quality high-performance router, like a DrayTek Vigor.

SP2 has the potential of scrambling so many different things on a computer
that I couldn't even hazard a guess.

IMO - if there were just 1/100th number of sp2 problems being reported than
are I'd not even get close to it.

Have you tried uninstalling it?

Thanks for your response. I upgraded the firmware the
original router and even had Linksys send a replacement.
Still having the same problem. Not running any
peer-to-peer file sharing or Internet gaming. It's really
strange. Again, it didn't start until after the SP2 update.

To find out whether it is really triggered by SP2, uninstall SP2
for a test. See http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm, chapter
General, subchapter If all else fails, for uninstall
instructions.

If the problem disappears, then this particular router is not
SP2 compatible on your computer, who would know why? If it
doesn't, then we don't have to look at SP2 any more to solve
this problem and you have gained time.

Disable the router MTU setting, it adds little if anything to the
connection speed. If this is cable broadband, always reboot the modem
after removing power for one minute as the first step in handling
connectivity problems, then bring up the router, then boot the
computers. Rebooting the modem clears its internal MAC address table
and allows new equipment to be connected and registered with the modem.

There isn't a router on the planet that is not SP2 compatible. This is
complete bull.

Q

A common cause of post-SP2 connectivity issues is network adapter drivers in
need of updating. See if updated drivers are available for your network
adapter and install them, or reinstall the current adapter drivers.

Another common cause of connectivity problems after installing SP2 is a
spyware, adware or virus infestation present before the upgrade was done.
You may wish to try uninstalling SP2 and then visiting
http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm to see if my cleaning process will
help.

Network adapters not SP2 compatible is complete and utter bullshit. If
they worked in SP1 they work in SP2. The problem with networking is
that SP2's left and right security hands are not coordinated. The
problem lies squarely with Microsoft to come clean with the effects and
solutions imposed by their operating system on networking. It is
becoming obvious that there are features in SP2 that have not been
revealed that are creating problems with otherwise good SP2
installations. Spyware and ad-ware and viruses are a problem, no doubt,
but this is being used by Microsoft itself as misdirection for their own
failure to fully understand the implications of their new security
features and to recify the problems quickly.

IMO, YMMV.
