I have an HP Pavilion 510c with Intel Celeron/133mHz. It got some viruses I
could'nt get rid of (resulting in BSOD), so a friend to me to DBAN the hard
drive and start over with a clean install of XP. I didn't care for any back
up files, so I smoked the machine and got rolling. (regret that now)

I've been been having a lot of problems starting with the CD. The install CD
did not boot. I got the black screen with the blinking cursor with no text.
(The CD drive is #1 on the boot priority list in BIOS). The CD drives opens
and closes, but when it tried to read it (it starts to whir so I know the
drive itself is healthy) it spins for a while, but nothing happened. I
expected to see the press any key to start kind of prompt or ANYTHING at all!

After that I decided to go to the floppy disk solution. Had the 6 floppy
disks setup set, but when setup finished loading and prompted for the Windows
XP Proffesional instlall CD, I put the CD in again, but again nothing
happened. The screen said "waiting", then blinked and when back to the same
prompt.

Next, I tried to run recovery console, but didn't know how to fix anythng. My
hard drive is Mr. Clean, so whats the point, right?

I admit I was in over my head from the beginning. I know I missed some
crucial steps somewhere; I've never done a reinstall before. I expect to be
filled in on what a thick skull I have for not being careful beforehand, but
could you still give me some advice on what to do. I'm open to all
suggestions.

BTW: the CD I have is the 2002 Academic Version; bought the system at
discount from a teacher. I found out that you needed to show verification of
teaching credentials or its a no go on upon activation. Is there any way to
circumvent that? Even if I can get the CD drive to boot the CD, I'll have to
spend 4 years in college for a certification just to use it. So, if theres
anything I can do about it before 2011 and ying yang full of student loans....

One possibility is that the CD drive has died. Just because the mechanicals
are working ok, doesn't mean the laser hasn't died. Try a different CD
drive.

To use the Academic version you need to be in that arena. If you're not
then purchase an OEM copy.
