new XP home install

my e-machine recovery cd's are damaged, so i bought a new copy of xp home,
and it will not load...it will not get past the checking your hardware part,
then the screen just goes black.

Hi

The OEM CD wasn't used on any other hardware first was it? Try
disconnecting all hardware apart from the mouse, keyboard and monitor.

i just opened the package, it was never used. other than the hard drive,
floppy, cd, dvd drives, keyboard, mouse, monitor there are no other
peripherals attached.
