New worksheet is in compatibility mode

I have been using Excel 2007 at work for several months now. Just yesterday,
I noticed that when I create a new worksheet, it is in compatibility mode
(65,536 rows, etc).

I don't remember doing anything to set new defaults.

Question 1: Shouldn't a 2007 mode be the default when I create a new
worksheet?
Question 2: How do I make 2007 mode be the default for new worksheets?

Did you perchance begin your session by opening an XLS file?
Close and open again
Do you have a hidden Personal.XLS file that get opened?
Change it to an XLB file

I did not open a hidden Personal.XLS. Nor did I open an XLS file at the
beginning of my session. I closed Excel and opened it up again. Still Excel
opened with Book1 [Compatibility Mode].

Did you copy over your book.xlt from your older version of excel?

Look in all your XLStart folders.

tried to save it in the XLSTART folder as a file named "Book" but it won't
let me (there's a note that the folder is Read Only). It might just be that
our IT person set it up that way. It's just that to me it seems backward that
I have Excel 2007 and the default new workbook is in Compatibility Mode. It
doesn't take much to convert to 2007 mode, but why should I have to?

closed excel and reopened it and still got 1M rows.

So this isn't the solution.

I'd still look for book.xlt* files.

You may not have looked in some hidden folders.

Using windows xp home, I can do this:

Windows Start button|Run
type:
CMD
(to get to the Command prompt)

C:
(to get to the C: drive--change this to the drive that excel is installed on)

cd\
(to get to the root directory)

dir book.xlt* /s

The /s says to search subfolders, too.

Make a note of the locations of the found files.

into 2007 into the XLSTART folder in C:\Programs\MicrosoftOffice\. . . and
came up with an error message that the folder is Read Only. It was probably
set up that way by our IT person on instruction from the powers that be.
Probably to protect the "general population" from mavericks like me.

I also noticed something else--when I go to Excel Options\Save\Save
Workbooks\Save files in this format--and I select Excel Workbook, it reverts
back to Excel 97-2003 Workbook after I close and reopen Excel.

I think I personally have spent enough, in fact more than enough time on
