I created a new Workgroup in XP. I was prompted to restart and did so. Now
I can't log onto that computer using my usual password.

The Dell support line said my only hope was to reinstall windows. Any help
would be much needed and greatly appreciated.

Randall,

how did you create a new workgroup in XP? What exactly did you
do?

Workgroup was created following the steps listed in XP help.

Open the System Control Panel
On the Computer Name tab Click Change...
Under Member of, click Workgroup
I created a new workgroup name, and was prompted to log off.

Now I can't get back on.

Okay, Make sure you are doing the correct thing. If you do not have a clue
what you are doing, do not do it. Well, it appears you created a workgroup
okay, Then it must ask a password? What did you put for the password? That is
the password to log in to your computer. Workgroup use for Networking? Were
you try to create a some kind of Network? You may have to reinstall if you
foget what you put as your password when you created a workgroup. When you
log in however, change WORKGROUP name to WORKGROUP then do not put any
password. It will not ask you for the password again when you restart.

Randall,

if you just change the workgroup name, the password does not
change.

The only idea I have is that you may have mistyped or mistook
the username or password. How long have you used this same
password for?

If you forget your own user password, the solution is to log on
as Administrator and reset the user's password.

I don't know much about Windows XP Home Edition and am not sure
whether things are different there. What I wrote holds for
Windows XP Professional.
