I'm trying Vista. I installed a standalone version of Windows Vista Home
Premium on a security-wiped hard drive.

I selected Sort by Name for a file list displayed by Windows Explorer; I
now see this (in part):

1E3D7009.eml
2A2E4C0B.eml
03B4210A.eml
7E5EE723.eml
2E94C219.eml
2F2E437B.eml
53C4880A.eml
2F590BB3.eml

How do I get Vista to sort the file list alphabetically?

Sorting base 16 numbers alphabetically is kind of hard....

Hi Augustus:

I did not ask Vista to sort any hexidecimal numbers. It is not hard to code
sorting of ASCII-character strings.

I'm trying to alphabetize a list of filenames in Windows Explorer under
Vista. When I "Sort by Name" in Windows XP, the file names are ordered
alphabetically based on the characters which comprise the filename. In
other words, the character "2" comes before the character "7". (You may
consult an ASCII chart to see the order for the 52 characters in the English
alphabet and the digits zero through nine.)

My expectation is for Windows Explorer in Vista, when sorting a file-name
list by name, is that the file name 7E5EE723.eml comes after all file names
beginning with the digit 2, for example.

How do I get Windows Explorer in Vista Home Premium to sort file names
alphabetically?

Hi Andre:

Thanks for your suggestion, but I'm not interested in third-party solutions,
yet.

I recently installed Vista on a spare laptop to see what all of the hype is
about. I am evaluating Windows Vista Home Premium.

At this point, I would like to know how to get Windows Explorer in Vista to
sort the contents of a folder alphabetically by file name.

Configure Windows Vista to use the sort order that is used by Windows 2000:

Hi Ramesh:

The article to which you pointed me resolved this problem; thanks for
recognizing the issue and posting the link.

I'm very surprised to have not noticed this change in sorting criteria
(implemented after Win 2000) until now. Good grief! I would have bet (and
lost) real money if somebody had challenged my earlier assertion that Win XP
sorts file names the way I want.

(Trivial Note: the registry addition did not take affect for me until after
a Vista reboot, contrary to the article.)

Cheers,

Thanks for the update, Mark.

Ah! A missed chance for me to make real money :)
