Vista's New Windows Explorer.

After a year my feelings about Vista are still mixed. While there are some
decent features, I still think many of the changes from XP are poorly
implemented or just idiotic. I’ll rant about those later. These are the
current list of frustrations I've been swearing about for the last year...
maybe there's some new fix without the need to go to 3ed party file
management software like Q-Dir.

1: HOW DO I GET RID OF TAGS??? I have no use for them yet I can never
permanently get rid of the damn column. It's just in the way and it keeps
coming back.

2: How do I shut off the file type system where it creates columns based on
file types. It never seems to get it right. Moving some old .eml mail files,
Vista set up columns as if they were music files. I’ve tried to create a
folder profile for, say mp3s… but Vista never remembers.

I just want the basics... like name, size, date modified, bit depth. I have
no use for the rest… but Vista just keeps shoving these other columns in my
face.

3: Hating the new file mismanagement system, I used a registry hack to put
move/copy on the Context menu. But is there ANY ANY ANY way to create an UP
ONE LEVEL button? Why in Hell MS got rid of the move/copy/up buttons is
beyond me. But then it’s from the same people that changed CTRL-ALT-DELETE to
get to Task Manager that had been used for 20 years.

I haven't used Windows Explorer in years even in Windows 3.1 days. Just
find a decent replacement and there are tons of them.

Sadly, when we're talking about how a giant, but unimaginative, corporation
manipulates politicians and regulators, and tries to leverage its near
monopoly in a PC operating system to maintain that monopoly and squeeze out
competitors... then that IS a political matter. But I agree we stray from the
topic. Not that you’ve been any help answering my questions.

Maybe you're right. I do have Q-Dir and it does offer more traditional
functionality than does Vista's bizarre file management system. I was just
hoping that there were some additional hacks/tricks that remedied/negated the
more idiotic features of Vista.

On a side note, there is a browser that has that feature....
http://avantbrowser.com/ It sits atop IE.

I use that UP one level button all the time. It's just so basic. Why MS got
rid of it and Move/Copy buttons.... AND removed move/copy from the context
menu, is beyond me. Often the new system has us doing 2-3 clicks to perform a
function that could once be done in one. Advanced Inconvienience. If you hate
the new Vista Explorer as much as I do, you might want to try Q-Dir
http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=Software/Q-Dir&language=english or other
programs like it.
