new user profile after recovery

Each time that I run the recovery routine, the system creates a new profile
at the first logon. Is there a way that I can revert to the original
profile? I know that I can copy all of the information from the old profile
but I now have 6 or 7 profiles for the same user. I am concerned that I will
lose some configuration information by copying files.

What recovery routine are you talking about? A vendor repair process,
System Restore, 3rd party utility??????
Why are you repeatedly running it? What is the base problem?

If you are running it because of a repeated profile corruption problem then
a hard disk issue is one possibility, but without some cogent information no
one will be able to help you.

I used to Windows XP recover command. I initally went back a couple of days
to fix an application that had been damaged by a bad download. The first
attempt fixed the problem but created a new profile. I reverted to original
and got my problem back. I also created a new profile. Then I went back to
before the bad download. Again it fixed the problem but created a new
profile.
The app the failed was Roxio CD creator. I couldn't create a CD from and
image. The bad app looked like MS media player ver 10.

The proper name for "Windows XP recover command" is System Restore.
It seems fairly clear that your original profile is corrupted and that
System Restore is not able to repair it. SR is a good feature but sometimes
fails due to corruption of the restore point repository or for other
reasons. I think your best bet is to create a new profile and to use the
procedure in "How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new
profile" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151/en-us
You are correct that this procedure may not perfectly recreate the profile,
but there may be no choice at this point.
After doing this and testing the new profile, I would delete the others.

Also, make sure that the version of Roxio CD creator you are trying to
install is XP compatible. I believe it must be 5.1 or greater.
