New to Win XP

I am new to XP and I think I did things correctly when using my new computer
for the first time [account set up etc]. BUT, a number of things have
happened and on investigation I find that the compute thinks I am not the
administrator. I am the only user of the computer so surely I must be the
administrator?
An example is ... I have ATi multimedia centre on the machine and whenever I
try to start it I get the error message 'Fatal error: ATiSSERV Logmaster
failed to startup!'
I've investigated on the Ati website and it appears to be because I am not
the administrator.
Any assistance is welcome.

Log on as administrator (if it is not the regular account you use), go to
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management (in classic
view), click on Users and Groups, then click your username. Right-click >
Properties, and set the user as a member of the Administrators group. Log
out, log in as your normal account and see if that helps.

Try booting to Safe Mode and log in as Administrator. Go to Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Users and Groups and add your
account to the Administrators group.

Thanks for the advice Ken. I've tried it but when I go to Control Panel >
Admin Tools > Computer Management ... I then only have the options of System
tools / Storage / Services & Applications ... there is no folder called
Users & Groups. I've looked in the three folders I've mentioned but still no
Users & Groups.
[What I did find when using Safe Mode and looking in Control Panel > User
Accounts was that there was an account called Administrator. This is not
visible in 'Normal' mode.]
Do you have any other suggestions?

Try booting to Safe Mode and log in as Administrator. Go to Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Users and Groups and add your
account to the Administrators group.

these three folders but there is nothing called 'Users and Groups'.

Interesting.. are you on XP Home? I use XP Pro; maybe there is a difference
in this way between the two. You could try Start > Run and type "user
passwords2" (without quotes) and see what happens.

Yes, I'm using XP Home. I've tried your suggestion but nothing happened.

Is the change not supposed to be made in "Control Panel=>User Accounts=>
Change an account" rather than in "Administrative Tools=>Computer
Management"?
