I'd like to be able to mark multiple messages as read and not see them the
next time I go to the group page. How can I do that?
Also, I'd appreciate an explanation of what "synchronization" is all about
and how it is useful.
Thanks

You can hold down the Ctrl key while you click on individual messages then right-click and select "Mark as Read", or press Ctrl + Q. Synchronize downloads All Messages, New Messages Only or Headers Only depending on your settings.

Go to View | Current View, and click Hide Read messages. To mark
a message as read select it with the mouse, right-click and
choose Mark as read. To mark multiple messages, select multiple
messages using Shift-click or Ctrl-click and do the same.

"Synchronization" synchronizes the state of your local messages
with those on the server. It downloads what you haven't yet
downloaded.

Thanks for that explanation. I'm wondering about the "downloading" part. If
every message that appears in the top pane is downloaded, where do they all
go? There must be a folder on my C drive that's getting awfully full. I
imagined that I was just reading messages "online." Where are they
downloaded to, and how can they be deleted?

Go to Tools | Options | Maintenatance | Delete and clean up
what's there periodically.
