New system install... locks up on defrag and virus scan

Let me begin by sayign this is a complete clean install of
the operating system on my computer. My harddisk crashed
and took everything with it. I installed windos 2000 SP3,
and then updated all drivers. After the drivers I did a
windows update and installed all the patches. I then did
a burn in test to make sure there were no problems.
Basically I ran defrag, deep level scan disk, and finally
norton web based virus scan. Everything ran fine. I then
installed office XP. I updated it with service pack 3 and
now my system locks up. It goes half way throuh defrag,
does scan disk, but thats before boot, and will not
complete an online virus scan. I installed AVS virus
protection and it too locks up in the middle of a scan.
What can I do. I really don;t want to reinstall the
operating system again. That was the first thing I tried.

Here is my system
Piii 600MHZ
720 megs ram
200 gigs hard disk ATA 33
DVD SCSI
cdrw SCSI
several usb devices. Zip, webcam, palm cradle.
G400 32 Max
Linksys net card
Soundblaster 5.1 live plat
Zoom modem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

You mention that defrag goes through "half-way". What do you mean by this.
Is there an error message being displayed? What happens if you boot into
Safe Mode and try defragmenting from there. Does it make it through all of
the way?
