new programs installed won't go away

each time I click the start button it shows new programs
installed and yet I have installed nothing new. I am
running XP Pro. Does anyone know where windows looks to
determine what is installed that flags that to pop up or
how I disable it?
 
With that feature enabled it will continue to say new programs installed
until you click on each and every shortcut that the new program installed.
If you never click all the shortcuts it keeps telling you.
To turn it off: right click start button, properties, customize, advanced
tab, uncheck the highlight new installed programs option.
