When I install a new [to me] program, I get a message to close all
open files. Is that message a joke or s/ I shut down ALL my other
programs?

PS I have WinXP Pro & SP 2.

I have never done that and I have yet to have a problem by not doing so.
 
It's just a precaution to avoid a conflict. Can you imagine how long it
would take to test a program with every application that could in theory be
running in the background? It is a good idea though to at least disable
anti-virus and antispyware apps before doing an installation-that is of
course after you scan your program to be installed to ensure that it is
clean.

How could I disable/delete this precaution?

Is there a way to disable antivirus and antispyware applications
temporarily? Occasionally, I would forget to turn them on again.
