New potential setup - opinions please

Pete

I need a new motherboard, CPU and memory. My overall budget is approx £200
for the CPU and mobo - e.g. if I get a relatively expensive CPU@£159 then
I'd probably need to go for a cheap mobo@£43.

I currently also have a 9800 Pro Graphics card and I'm looking to get the
best gaming performance possible out of the following combinations of
hardware. Which CPU and mobo am I best going for from this lot?

CPUs:

AMD ATHLON 64 BIT 3000 2000FSB SKT-939 - £105
AMD ATHLON 64 BIT 3200 1600FSB SKT-754 OEM - £125
AMD ATHLON 64 BIT 3200 2000FSB SKT-939 Retail - £149
AMD ATHLON 64 BIT 3400 1600FSB SKT-754 OEM - £155
AMD ATHLON 64 BIT 3400 1MB SKT-754 OEM - £159

Mobos:

ASUS A7V8X-X DDR400 - £37.00
AMD ATHLON 64 BIT 3200 2000FSB SKT-939 Retail - £43
ASUS SKT-939 A8V DELUXE 64 BIT - £86
ASUS SKT-754 K8V SE DELUXE 64 BIT - £79
MSI SKT-754 K8T NEO-FIS2R 64 BIT - £75
GIGABYTE SKT-754 K8NS PRO NFORCE III 250 64 BIT - £72
GIGABYTE K8NS ULTRA 939 NFORCE 4 250 - £86.00

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Will my 9800 Pro AGP work with these mobos?

AMD ATHLON 64 BIT 3000 2000FSB SKT-939 - £105

AMD ATHLON 64 BIT 3400 1600FSB SKT-754 OEM - £155
AMD ATHLON 64 BIT 3400 1MB SKT-754 OEM - £159
with A64's socket 939 chips, only these boards will work
ASUS SKT-939 A8V DELUXE 64 BIT - £86
GIGABYTE K8NS ULTRA 939 NFORCE 4 250 - £86.00

i recommend the Asus A8V, and yes the AGP card will work in it

I have a k8v se deluze and a 3200+ with an aiw 9800 pro, excellent
performance.
stick with a 3200, as the price per mhz over that isnt worth the money.
All you really need to decide is whether you want to go 754 or 939
I think the 754 will offer some cheaper cpu upgrades in the future as it
gets fazed out.

Anyway, athlon64 is the way to go.

Say I got one 512MB DDR400 PC3200 DIMM and a Athlon-64 3200, would the
SKT-939 version offer any noticeable performance advantage over the 754?

With a single stick of memory , probably not.
Running a pair in dual channel mode might give you a few percent more but
nothing major.
The main advantage of S939 is that you would be able to drop a faster
processor in in future whereas 3500 is about the limit on S754

i always go to trouble shoot forums to see problems before buying that
people have with my chosen product..it lets you into a few secrets ..i would
go for the 939 cpu and stay away from asus as the can be difficult...look
for performance of the mobo rather than two mant extras which cost
money...you can add them later...
