hey all,
i just bought a new pc over the weekend and it came with just a recovery cd
(which i'm not fond of because it still contains all that extra stuff like
aol and virus protection stuff and all that other stuff that i don't want on
the machine.) . i'm getting an applications and driver disk mailed to me by
the manufacturer.

do i have any options on doing a clean install?

thanks,
rodchar

A clean install is what the recovery media is generally supposed to do. For
a repair install, it'll depend on the make and model of the PC that you have.
Some have built-in "non-destructive" restore options.

Not likely. You can restore the system to it's delivered condition
(with all the crap, and nothing you've added). In some cases I think
you have the option to run a repair install of XP, which will preserve
your program changes.

What kind of options? Have you tried to get a copy of the installation CD
from the manufacturer? Some will do this at a reduced cost. If they won't
sell you that, then you'll need to check the documentation to find out if
you can do a recovery without adding all the applications, then use the
application CD to install what you want. If the only option is to restore
with all the apps, then the last choice is to purchase a copy of XP and do a
clean install with it, then use the drivers and applications CDs .
