new page does not show up

whenever i get to the end of typing a page, a new page does not show up. in
order to view the new page, i have to manually make a page break by pressing
ctrl+enter. why is this happening and how can it be fixed? i have word 2003
and 2002 on my computer and it does this on both of them.
 
Go to Format | Columns and click on the preset picture for One, then OK. If
this solves the problem in a given document, and you are experiencing the
same difficulty in all new documents, you'll need to make this same change
in Normal.dot; see
