new Outlook 2007 installation using gmail - cannot send emails usingoutlook 2007

This is the first time I have set up Outlook 2007 (or any Outlook, for
that matter) and I am trying to use IMAP with my gmail account to send
and receive emails. I am able to receive emails from gmail into my
Outlook 2007, but whenever I try to send email using Outlook 2007, the
email does NOT get sent, it just sits there in the outbox.

Can anybody assist in solving this problem?

Thank you.

did you follow the exact steps per gmails instructions? if so, are you using
a firewall that blocks the ports gmail tells you to use?

Yes, I followed the exact steps from Gmail and double checked it.

I don't know what how I would check if a firewall would block it. I
have Norton Internet security installed.
