New Notepad Automatically Closes

I've recently updated to Windows XP SP2 and I'm pretty sure that a new
version of notepad was included. The version currently in my windows folder
is version (5.1.2600.2180). Whenever I open that version it closes as soon
as the window pops up. This happens whenever I try and view the source of a
webpage also, hence why it annoys me so much. I searched my hard drive and
found a (5.1.2600.0) version of notepad. This one works fine. I'm simply
going to replace the non-working version so no big deal. Does anyone know
why this is happening though?

Sounds very odd. I know that there are many viruses that will close
programs that might help you to remove the virus.

Try running regedit.exe and, if that also closes, it's very likely you have
a virus.

Having said that, I've never come across notepad.exe being closed
automatically.

I had that happen a while back. The shortcut is probably corrupted. Go into
the Windows folder and create a new shortcut to your start menu.
