Downloaded the MS Baseline Security and installed it. When the application
was run i got the 'your security settings prohibit running active x controls
on this page' error.
In order to get the thing to work i had to change the registry key: Zone 0
1200 from 10000 to 0 (zero)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \
Internet Settings \ Zones \ 0

Why not just use the ActiveX security setting interface in IE or Control
Panel Internet Settings. You MVP's always want to make things more
difficult than the really are! Is it you are trying to show off/impress
your fellow geeks, how smart your aren't, that you really are a geek with no
life or all of the above? What you need to remember here is most of the
posters don't even know how to get into regedit, much less wanting them to
be there in the first place, so its best to give answers using any GUI
interface available, unless absolutely no other method to interface is
available.

If the option from the security setting in IE had worked then i would have
said so. The reason why the registry had to be edited was simply because the
option in IE *did not* work.
No one is being smart or out to impress and i, for one, am not a geek. if
you take a look at my website you will see that, wherever, possible
instructions are given in plain english.
As am IT Journalist i am am more than aware that most novice/beginners are
regedit shy and i wouldn't even recommend anyone who isn't familiar with the
registry to attempt editing it.
My original comment was in response to Richard's original post regarding the
availablity of the MS Baseline security analyser. Had i not have included
the comment about me editing the registry i am sure Richard or Will would
have suggested it.

This new version dropped the /hf and /v switches so I can no longer do quick
checks for patches for SQL, OS, XML, MDAC, etc.
For stand alone computers not using update services like SUS, MU, etc, those
switches were nice features for putting into a batch file to just check for
needed Microsoft updates then output to a text file.

Does Microsoft have any alternatives to easily scan for above patches for
standalone computers? I know that http://www.shavlik.com has full version of
hfnetchk but I don't believe I should have to pay for checking for Microsoft
updates.
