New Motherboard ABIT NF7 from ABIT KT7a-Raid

Darren

I just purchased a new ABIT NF7 motherboard and AMD
Athalon 2500 CPU. Pulled out my old motherboard etc.
Reinstalled the new board. New board posts fine, and I
can get to the BIOS set-up. However, when I restart the
computer, I get a blue screen error message when it
attempts to load WinXP Pro.

I called ABIT Tech Support, and they of course told me
that it's a software issue. I tested it with my old
motherboard again, and didn't have a problem. Tech
Support said something about the hardware environment
needing to be changed somehow in Windows XP for the HDD
to work with the new motherboard.

Can anyone please help me with information on how to do
this? I'm a relative block-head when it comes to this
stuff, so please keep it in layman's terms.

Thanks in advance,

Darren

Hi Darren

Not sure about the 'words of wisdom' bit but here goes... ;o)

Are you seeing and responding to the "press any key to boot from CD" prompt
when starting up the computer with the XP CD in the CD-ROM drive?

you should only need to set the first boot device to CD-ROM, second as HDD,
third as whatever you like.

Check your BIOS settings... default settings unless otherwise required for
specific hardware to boot or install.

BTW If you have back-ups and are comfortable re-installing applications I'd
go for the clean install with the new MB.

Post an update when you can.
hope that helps in the meantime

As well as checking the timely and valid query from LVTravel.. (thanks LV, I
should have followed up on that earlier....) .....)

If you can't perform an install on your old MB when you try that will be a
very good indicator of the real problem.

If your CD *is* an install XP CD.. then check you have the CD-ROM connected
via IDE1 or 2 on your mainboard and carefully reconnect the cables
themselves. You may want to try with the HighPoint Controller disabled,
there was a recent post here regarding a *potential* incompatibility.

Update when possible, hopefully with good news - I'm running out of ideas
here.

Hi Darren

Glad you got it sorted out... 9 times out of 10 it's a simple fix that
*should* have been obvious... It's eliminating all the other obvious
solutions that takes time..)

Cheers

Two good places to look is memory and then video card. Memory was a cause
of a similar problem. One of the 2 chips worked with the MB (VIA) and one
did not even thou it is working in an AMD 950 system fine. Used the good
chip and never had a problem and have since upgraded the SDram to DDR and
things are fine.
