new monitor adjustments

I've now got two Dell P1110 monitors:

1 - Original
2 - Just purchased used

I'm using them side-by-side and I'm struck by how much brighter #2 is
than #1 even though it looked just fine in the home where I bought it.
Both are set to the same DPI setting, using the same adapter, and
driver. Even when WinXP is booting, the black screen looks much
brighter on #2. In addition, the text looks pretty bad on #2 even
though it looked fine when I bought it.

Can someone clue me in on the adjustments I need to make to #2 to synch
up with #2 and to improve the text quality?

TIA,
David

Did you swap video cables?

Nope. I used the same cable I had with my old (second) monitor. Might
that be the problem?

Try exchanging cables and see if the problem moves.

You also mentioned you're using the same graphics adapter at the same
time. Does that mean you are using an adapter that has two outputs or
two adapters in two different computers.

Regardless, you will have to rule out the hardware and cables before
blaming the monitor, especially since you claim it looked fine
somewhere else.

I'm referring to the link that's in the article, not the link to the
article itself.

Also, would this address the text quality issue?

Thanks

Found another instance of the link in the article and it works fine.

So, I'm still wonder whether this would address the quality issue or
just the brightness?

I don't know if I can address exactly what you need, but I will tell
you what I learned. It seems this is a common problem with the Sony
Trinitron monitors, and there is a means of adjusting all aspects of the
brightness and convergence. There is a port the service centers access
and you can make a device that will allow you to do the same by using
software easily downloaded for this purpose. Most often the major
problem is the "Too bright" monitor, but it is possible your other
problems might fall into place once this problem is solved. If your
problem remains one of focus, there are adjustments for that on the flyback.

I have yet to assemble the device to access the port on my monitor, but
I did make the resistor modification to reduce the screen voltage. When
that was lowered, my remaining problems are so minuscule that I may not
attempt any further adjustments. I would suggest you look into doing
the resistor change and see what you have. If you need help locating
more information, write a message requesting it and I will contact you
if your Email address is valid.

Will do; thanks Ken.

I got a monitor recently and I though it very bright (text OK though) set it
to min
brightness and contrast, i selected an off white white in windows
properties
which helped.
I turn the brightness up a little shen watching video (TV) on it as there
tends
to less white in the picture.
Is it a better spec model, newer models tend to have more brightness
available.
Maybe higher brightness makes the viewing angle better?
Mine has a protective film stretched over the screen (its still there),
maybe you
could get one with a 'sunglasses effect'. the screen is still there, the
tobacco smoke on it
helps!!
Overall though mine is fine.
Maybe its a 'feature' not a problem?

Can someone recommend where I might find the required 4.7-6.8 MOhm
resistors? Radio Shack nor Fry's seem to have them.

Also, I assume MOhm mean 'mega-ohm', yes?

Thanks,
David

Yes, the values are MEG Ohms. Keep in mind that you can add two
resistors in series to obtain the values. You don't want to make it
physically too long, but that is an option. Also you might have a
friend who tinkers with electronics and they might help you make the
modification? If Radio Shack does not have the resistors, try some shop
that repairs electronic equipment. It would be cheaper than ordering
them and they are only worth pennies.
