Scott;
It is a little to early to tell for now.
But all installed with no troubles on my computer.

Carey:

I installed them all, and everything went smoothly. Thanks
for the reassurance.

I had no problems with these patches.

I would suggest that if you are concerned about these critical updates you
should also update to SP2. My philosophy is that if MS deem a patch to be
'critical' or 'security' I will take it. Who knows the relevance of these
patches to 'me' but I really don't want to make such assumptions. Having
said that (and before anyone jumps in) yes I am aware that updates
(including SP2) do cause problems but that is the dilemma.

Bill,

It turns out about 10% of users had problems, some significant, with the
SP2 upgrade. That's not to say I won't do it. I'm just waiting to see
if Microsoft maybe comes out with an improved version of SP2 to handle
these issues. If that doesn't happen, then at some point, I will make
sure my hardware has the latest drivers and then take the plunge.

Scott;
It is extremely unlikely there will be a replacement for SP-2, there is no
need.
Unless you count SP-3 which may or may not be out next year or later.
The only reason SP-1a was released was because of a court agreement.
SP-1 is identical to SP-1a except Virtual Machine was removed from SP-1a.
Other than that nothing else was changed.

A little research and a well maintained computer eliminate most problems
with SP-2:

Jupiter,

OK, thanks for clarifying that.

Scott,

I ( my client) was one of those with a problem. I installed SPA from a CD
(so saving the download time) and you know how long the install takes, to
find that it didn't work and had to uninstall the be****by thing (same time
as installing) to get the computer back to as it was.
