new mail

My laptop is not alerting me of new mail even though I have it checked to
check every 2 minutes in Tools/Options. It will only do it if I close
Windows Mail and reopen.

You are likely to 'hang' the mailbox on the server by checking that frequently.
Change it to every 5 minutes.
Which antivirus are you running? Some of them cause problems with
Windows Mail over time.
