New mail notifications (again)

I have folders created to sort mail by sender and have created rules to automatically filter messages into these folders based on the sender. It appears that I am not getting new mail alerts (sound alerts, or systray envelope alerts) for emails that are being sorted into these folders via the rules I have created. Nor is the folder becoming "bold" or expanded so that I know that I have any new mail.

I have set a rule to show the desktop alert for all new mails, but this still isn't fixing my other issues. I have searched for hours all over the 'net for a solution but have yet to find one. Not having my nested folders (three levels deep) bolded or expanded to show new mail is quite frustrating!

Outlook does bold the name of the folder to which a rule moves a message
provided the rule doesn't mark the message as read. However, Outlook won't
expand subfolders so, if you're putting your messages three deep in the
tree, you won't see the folder names. Widen your tree structure and make it
less deep. Bring those subfolders up to the top level parallel with Inbox.
