New mail alerts should work for all folders, not just Inbox.

Outlook 2003
I have a lot of rules setup to route incoming mail to the appropriate
folders. This works nicely but it also means I do not get new mail
notifications, these are only triggered for new mail in the inbox (and that
sucks). I want to tell Outlook whether I want to be disturbed for new mail on
a per folder basis.

So now I end up checking the favorite folder Unread Mail a lot by
double-clicking the tray icon and minimizing Outlook again when there's no
new mail (making it dock back into the tray). Doing so brings on another
need: double-clicking the tray icon while Outlook is visible should hide it
again so I don't have to row all the way up to the minimize button or press
Alt+Space N.

you can add the option to notify you to each rule - desktop alert is the
blue thing that comes up on the screen or you can show a new mail dialog
box.

I would like the "new mail envelope" icon to appear in my systray when
messages are delivered to ANY folder not just the inbox. The blue desktop
alert thing is ok, but it disappears, so if i happen to look away from my
computer i may miss it. The envelope notification stays there until I read
the message, so that is a better reminder. The new mail dialog is too
obtrusive because it pops up in front of whatever I'm working on.

unfortunately, outlook doesn't work that way. Instead of using rules to move
messages, you could use search folders to separate them into virtual
folders - or just use the unread search folder instead of relying on the
tray icon.

Outlook used to work that way, but so many people complained to Microsoft
that they changed it to the current behavior. But instead of taking the
"customer is always right" approach, Microsoft toggled the setting to the
reverse instead of adding an option to allow the USER to toggle it the way
they want.

I think this is junk. With the application minimized and hidden to the
system tray, the envelope icon is a function I relied on heavily to know if
new mail has arrived. Why not make it a TOGGLEABLE function, instead of
removing the option entirely?

Regarding this suggestion and the OP's suggestion, we should be able to set
the following options per folder:

1. Play a sound when mail arrives
2. Display a mail icon in the system tray
3. Display the desktop alert

I would turn #3 off and turn #1 and #2 on, just like it was in Office 2000.
That's how I've come to do my work the last 4 years and I can't believe it is
not even an option anymore.

I'm a little late joining this discussion, but i would like to voice my
frustration at this too. I had to turn off all my rules because of this
little change in the way outlook works . Now i have a horrible unorganised
inbox :( but have no choice since i keep missing emails when i dont get the
new mail envelope in the system tray.

Would it be so hard to make it an option?

I too am frustrated about the way this works. I had created a bunch of rules
to organize incoming email messages and couldn't figure out why I was no
longer seeing my new mail notification. Once I found out what was going on, I
had to delete all my rules - very annoying .

The option of having a desktop alert is not practical for me as I often have
to leave me desk or my screensaver goes on and so I cannot see those notices
pop up. I also find it distracting to have popups display when I'm in the
midst of doing something that requires concentration.

This should at least be a toggable option when setting rules. Microsoft???

AND it should work for IMAP...

The most important reason for wanting the Desktop Alert to function for all
email accounts is the ability to work with the messages without having to
open outlook completely. I can flag, mark as read or delete messages from
the corner of my screen. With only the New Item Alert, I can't do anything
other than open the message. USELESS!

Please expand the Desktop Alert functionality!

So what was decided finally? Are you people going to ship it with the next
service pack or what??

This is a Public News group, "we people" are only users and and aren't
shipping anything.
