New mail alert sound when Outlook is not the default mailreader?

Hi folks,
Can anyone advise if it is possible to get Outlook to play the new mail
alert sound when it is NOT the default email programme please?
We have Outlook Express setup as our default mailreader for our various
personal accounts, and I have Outlook setup for my business accounts. With
this configuration it seems that the new mail alert only works when Outlook
Express is open. Any help greatly appreciated

Is Outlook running at the time?

Yes. If I have Outlook open and new mail arrives I get the new mail graphic
in the bottom rh corner, but no sound. If I happen to ALSO have Outlook
Express open at the same time when new mail arrives in one of my OUTLOOK
accounts then I get the sound alert (Note no mail has arrived at the same
time in OExp acct). Any ideas?
