Hey,

I'm going to buy a new laptop or netbook soon and wondered if it was worth waiting for the new Intel processors to make their way into the machines? I know there are i3, i5, i7 etc. processors and some new Atom processors coming out.

Does anyone have any idea what the new ones will be like compared to the Core 2 Duo? Is it worth waiting and when are they due?

Thanks.

Well, they won't be a step backwards as they had to do with the duo's ... actually pent IIs or some-such-crap ... but I believe they are taking AMDs & re-badging them, err, no, oh, maybe not then.

Laptop or Netbook, they really are two different fish, one is crap, one is crappier ... :)

It's hard to say if it will be worth waiting for, as there is always something faster on the horizon. If you are considering a netbook, then I guess power isn't your primary requirement?

The Arrandale might be what you are waiting for if it's a netbook? There's an overview of it here at Anandtech : http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3705 and it does seem to be worth a little wait in this case.

From the balanced notebook perspective, Arrandale is awesome. Battery life doesn't improve, but performance goes up tremendously. The end result is better performance for hopefully the same power consumption. If you're stuck with an aging laptop it's worth the wait. If you can wait even longer we expect to see a second rev of Arrandale silicon towards the middle of the year with better power characteristics. Let's look at some other mobile markets, though.

You shouldn't need to wait to long to be able to pick one up :)
