New Hard Drive will not Defrag

K

Keene

I have just installed a new 60gig HD. I have two older
30gig each HD already on my box. Interestingly, the new
HD will not allow me to run "defrag", the other two HDs
run "defrag" just fine. In all other respects the new
60gig HD runs just fine, I have it about 50% full of
DVD's, MP3's, etc. (pretty much all Media types - no
programs). I can run scan disk, ckdisk and play movies
and music, but no "defrag". I realize this is not the end
of the world, but is there a reason that "media" files
will not "defrag"? Is there anything to be concerned
about?

Thanks for the reminder. I get a BSOD with the following
message:
0X0000000A <0X7FFFFFFF, 8X00000002, 0X00000001, 0X804154C3>

804154C3base at 80400000, Date Stamp 3ee6c002 -
ntoskrnl.exe

Does this make any sense to you?
Thanks,
Keene

You didn't mention what happens when you try.

Not an OS upgrade, but yes it was installed at the same
time we put in a new motherboard and CPU. The only error
message that I have seen is the BSOD, however I have
looked at the event viewer and noticed the error symbols.

Any Event Viewer errors? Was this an upgrade install?

Keene,

BSOD crashes can only be caused by a hardware issue or a driver that isn't
working correctly.

- Are the new hardware components on the HCL?
- Do you have latest drivers for everything?
- Boot into Safe Mode and try to defrag from there. Does the system still
BSOD?

Keene,

Are you able to run CHKDSK on this drive without it causing a BSOD?

Greg,
Thanks for the input! Yes, it does BSOD from "Safe
Mode". Obviously I don't understand what is going on,
but it does everything else just fine.
Any Suggestions?
Thanks,
Keene
