New Hard drive setup

I'm not sure if I can do this or not. I have a 180GB hard drive that I want
to install to replace one that's 20GB. My question is can I take out the old
one that keeps locking up on me and put the new 180GB ? I have a Pentium III
500MHz,320MB RAM. Will someone please give me a way around it.. I'm fairly
new at this. I'm running Windows 98 2nd edition, but on the new drive I want
to load XP. Possible??

Sound like a fairly old PC,
First check that the bios will recognise the large hd.
You may need to update the bios - from your mobo manu site or PC manu site
If this is ok, pull old hd install new hd as master, boot from winxp cd -
you may have to alter boot order in bios - and follow prompts to
partition/install
WinXp needs to be SP1 to recognise hd larger than 127gb - this is NOT the
same as your bios.
PS you might be advised to increase ram to 512mb
