I've just installed a new hard disk for a friend a couple of weeks ago, and
I've just got it back as the hard disk failed again, I got it to boot up from
the XP CD but it told me that I did n't have a hard disk, anyway I've now
got it to boot up again finally, but now it get so far through checking the
status and I get the message ' Primery Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T. command failed,
F1 to resume. WhenI press the F1 XP boots up OK. Can any one tell me why it
stops at F1 and how to fix this

S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics is built into the hard drive. If you are told that
the drive is bad, believe it. I have seldom (if ever) seen it wrong.

The hard drive has built-in diagnostics (S.M.A.R.T.) and this is telling you
that the command has failed. This means that the drive is dead, bad or is
failing. Get the complete diagnostic tool from the hard drive manufacturer
and run it so as to check the hard drive. If this utility reports
problems/failures, then contact the hard drive manufacturer so as to see what
are this warranty policies and get it replaced.

DON'T BE FOOLED! Hard drives can definately come from the factory bad.
They could be damaged in shipment to the store as well as could be dropped by
a store clerk. Call the manufacturer of the device and get ahold of the RMA
department. If you are within 21 days of purchasing the drive then return it
to the store they should replace it. Good Luck,
