My generosity overwhelms me sometimes. Please go to the New Download
section of www.mcse2000.com for a FREE app that will print out the backup
log of NTBACKUP automatically without a user logged into the server!!! Easy
to use! This works on 2003 and XP, a version for 2000 will be out in 24
hours after testing.

This app will save your BUTT!!!! Keep accountability and know if your jobs
are running. Sets up in a minute! Previously this was only possible with
$500 Backup Exec.

Hi Mark

Thank you very much. Two questions.

1. Does this work with yhe SBS NTBACKUP wizard scheduler or only with native
NTBACKUP?

2. I have no objection to registering via the popup asking for my email
address but I do want to know if that is a legitimate popup from your site?

Seems like the SBS ntbackup and the administrator report that is
automatically built is fine in my book.

The generosity of everyone in the newsgroups overwhelms me.

Susan

Frank,
It works with the scheduler as well!!! As long as NTBACKUP is the
backup program. The popup for registering your email is to let people know
when new software arrives. Tomorrow when the 2000 version comes out I will
likely let everyone know. I'm sure this will be a widely used app by many!

Well, Susan......some people like the fact that the log prints automatically
and when they arrive in the morning they can punch 3 holes and bind it,
especially if they don't have a f/t or p/t admin but someone that comes a
few hours a month. For the consultants in this NG, I am SURE they are part
of the 400+ people that downloaded it today to use. While many people here
offer help, I offer apps that some 100,000 people/month download.

some of the FREE s/w:
VBscripter
NTBACKUP print log
Windows admin unlock s/w
How-to DNS, WWW, best practices
Troy Backup
and many apps that I wasn't involved with but are great

Hi Mark

Thanks - I will go back and use the popup. Just wanted to be sure it was
genuine these days!

Frank

Or the email in SBS2k3 can be sent to the external consultant as well.

uh, more than just that!!! If it was that easy, then why hasn't anyone else
come out with it? Did you forget that printers are installed PER USER and
when you are logged off, this IS a BIG issue. There were some other quirks
too but I am more than willing to test your version out :)

Y'all obviously missed the <g>...

Haing said that, I know exactly how NT printing works - since NT Backup
is scheduled as a Task, it usually runs in the Administrator context,
and any printers installed by Administrator (usually all of 'em) will
be available.

How do I set it up to email the backup print when the backup completes.
I've been hunting around and cant see where you set this up.

More than one way to skin that cat. I personally use BLAT (google it - it's
freeware).

I've installed this, it's printing a log, but not the most recent log,
and its not running at the correct time.

Time of run: Looking in C:\ntbackup the file loglist.txt is time stamped
00:40. Looking at the log for the latest backup, it completely finished
at 02:18. On closer inspection I see that the verify phase started at
00:40 - I want the print after the verify has completed to know if all
is OK.

Not printing correct log: The contents of the loglist.txt is:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup01.log
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup02.log
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup03.log
C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup01.log
C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup02.log
C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup03.log
C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup04.log
C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup05.log
C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup06.log
C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup07.log
C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup08.log
C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup09.log

The actual log file printed is the first backup03.log, not backup09.log.

However neither of these is the full log file as it is looking in
Documents and Settings for the log file, when (in SBS 2003 at least) the
full log files are in Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business
Server\Support\Backup Logs.

Can all these problems be sorted out or do I need to look at some other
way of getting the log files printed?

Warning: I tried using this on SBS 2003 and found it is useless. It
prints the wrong log file and prints before the verify has finished.
I've had no response to my posting on the problems found.

yes, you did get a response and the answer was that evidently Microsoft
changes event log codes for every freaking version of server so instead of
the 2 versions we have for 2000 and 2003, we now need to develop 2 more for
each sbs. Thanks Microsoft for making our lives so easy.

Thanks Mark - I didn't see the response - where did you post it to? I'm
only looking in microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs.
