new email message problem-symbols appear and a dot between words

When I open a new message in outlook it shows paragraph break symbols and
return arrow symbols and in the reply mode the type begins with a paragraph
break symbol and has a dot between each word that I type. How do I reset or
deactivate this? Thanks for the help.
When I send the message the receiving person does not see the symbols.
