New Drive Woes

I have a new 120 drive to replace the 75 mb drive that came in the system.

I already tried the Maxtor MaxBlast and posted the 99% good results on this
forum.

I have Acronis, never installed so tried that on another system.

Installed OK, Made the boot CD OK, booted from the CD OK and made a full
image backup (on a network drive-18 inches away) OK. Then I rebooted from
CD and verified the image, NG. Tried again with no other network activity,
NG

I can open the image and view various directories, but each time I try the
verify it fails about 80% of the way into the process.

Now I don't know if the image was made OK and the NG verify is false or if
the OK image was false and the NG verify is correct.

I tried an incremental backup to the original full image and it was reported
to have successfully concluded with no errors, but still verifies NG.

I checked with the TI forums but the answer was to check memory or use a
different drive for backup. I know from the help text that Acronis supports
backups on a network drive, so it should work OK. This is a new IBM tower
computer that I am just using to see how Acronis works before I trust the
upgrade process to the system that really needs it. (Another identical IBM
tower).

Version 8 build 791 (Yes, I know it is an old version, but its never been
installed and if V8 doesn't work for this simple process, then I'm not
encouraged enough to buy the current V 10.

TIA, George W. Barrowcliff

When I had a verify problem with TI it transpired that there was a memory
problem
www.memtest.org download, create the floppy or cd & run for several hours.
It makes no difference that its a new sys.

George:
First of all, I see that you raised this virtually same query back in April.
I say "virtually" because in your "original" post you indicated you have
purchased the 120 GB Maxtor HDD to replace a 40 GB HDD. I notice you now say
it was to replace a 75 GB HDD. But no matter.

In your "original" post you indicated that you had the Acronis (True Image)
version 9 program. Now you say you're working with the older version 8. That
is of some consequence since the ATI version 9 did correct some anomalies of
the older version 8.

In any event you received a number of responses to your query re using the
Acronis program. One of those responses was from me in which I included
step-by-step instructions for using the ATI program - relevant to both the 9
& 10 versions.

Did you follow those instructions? Or because you were using version 8 of
the ATI program those instructions were not relevant?

Anyway, I would strongly suggest you work with either the ATI 9 or 10
versions. As I'm sure you're aware, Acronis has a 15-day trial version
available for their current version 10. At least they did the last time I
perused their site.

Thank you Anna, and yes I printed and have your last response which I
intended to follow in this process. I knew I had a down version of Acronis
and thought it was V9 but it turned out to be V8 instead.
I have two systems that are virtually identical, both new 3000 Mhz IBM
towers with 1 GB of memory. One system is a production system and the other
is just 'there' and I have nothing that I cannot afford to lose on it,
consequently that is the one I was trying out V8 before I risked my
production system.
My intent was to do a full image to the network drive, then verify it,
then put in a blank drive and restore the image as a precursor to doing this
with my production system.
When it failed to verify I was in a never never land not knowing if the
origiinal was bad but reported OK or the verify was OK but reported bad. I
did not want to risk my production data. I have since run another full
image backup and successfully verified the image twice so think the first
was just bad somehow.
I wanted to make sure all this worked before I bought V10 and used your
instructions .
I wasn't ignoring your very thorough advice, just trying to be as safe as
possible. I did try to email you earlier in the week but apparently did not
decode your email address correctly.

Thanks for your continued support of this forum.
