New document in Word XP

J

Jeff

I was using Word from Office 97 and just moved to Office XP and its Word.

In my Word 97, I could go to File/New... and select which template I wished
to start with. Actually I had placed an icon for this on my Word 97 taskbar
for easy access.

In the Word from Office XP, this same command now opens a panel on the
right, with at the bottom of it something called "general templates" which
if I click on finally gives the template view I had in Word 97 to choose
from. That is too many steps. Is there a command for "general templates" I
could use to place on my taskbar to provide that same view I had in W97 or
do I need to create a macro just to achieve the same result?

Thanks.

Right Click on the menu bar and select Customize and then go to the Commands
tab and select the All Commands category and scroll down the list of
commands until to come to the FileNewDialog command. Left click and drag
it onto the toolbar. Once it's on the toolbar, you can right click on it to
customize it by giving it a button face. I copied the blank document button
face onto it and then edited it so that it appears as a document that is not
blank (lines across the page) to distinguish it from the blank document
button.

Thank you. That did it.

How do I avoid it's opening the new document as (what appears to be) another
instance of Word instead of within the present Word window?

Any other similar hints about moving to Word 2002?

It's not a new instance of Word; it's Word's new Single Document Interface,
introduced in Word 2000, in which each document gets its own window (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/SDIMDI.htm). Most of us have come to
prefer this, but if you don't, you can change it by clearing the check box
for "Windows in Taskbar" on the Edit tab of Tools | Options. For more
suggestions for making Word 2002 more like previous versions, see

Should we be calling SDI 'new'? It's been around since 1999.

Thank you. I agree, if it is not an new instance of Word, it is better.
Thanks.

There are still many using Word 97, etc. To us, it is new :)

Well, as Jeff says, it's certainly new the first time you encounter it! And
it is new in the sense of something that replaces the old.
