"new document" always shows a word in the first line...

J

Jennie R.

I help seniors with their computer programs. One gentleman has a
problem with Word that baffles me. Every time he opens a new document,
it starts out with the word "This" on the first line which can be
deleted but appears again each time. Now I think it has something to
do with a template accidentally created or some kind of Macro. I would
appreciate any help.

Second problem: Somehow he got a macro working that inserts a French C
sign every time he types the word "is".

thanks, Jennie

For the first issue have a look here:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm

As to issue #2, the most likely cause is an AutoCorrect item. Since you
don't mention version I'll assume 2003 or prior, so Tools>AutoCorrect is
where to start. Type 'is' (without the quotes) into the Replace box which
should cause the entry to appear in the 2-column list below. If so, click on
the entry, click Delete, OK, and it should no longer happen.

For the first problem, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm. For the second,
assuming by "French C sign" you mean a ç, look in Tools | AutoCorrect
Options for an AutoCorrect entry to replace "is" with ç (or whatever it is
that he's getting).
