NEW DELL GX520 OX800CCC13 error

I've had this computer for less than one month. Now I have a new
connection error, there is nothing wrong with my Verizon DSL settings.
I just had to check them with another Microsoft error about a week ago.

I have an Optiplex GX520. I am a single user, no network, just me. I
use Grisoft's AVG Professional anti-virus. I have no other programs
loaded, no firewall, no spyware. I use Verizon DSL and Outlook 2003.
There are no end to the problems I have with outlooks, two other
computers I returned to dell had problems sending out my emails, but
different issues, no codes.

Now I'm getting the 0X800CC13, trouble connecting to the network, check
your modem.
The single email sat in my outbox, and then I pressed send/receive
again. Both times this happened. Both times just now I was able to get
them through by pressing send/receive.

I see postings on this but not anything recent. That led me to believe
maybe the problem in theory was resolved, but clearly it is not.

Just a week or two ago I had this error code:
0X80042109

Seems like a perilous way for a self-employed person to have to live,
with a new error message every week. For the above code, verizon had
to just delete and start my settings over again.

Another weird thing that happened, my Delete box suddenly showed over
1,000 deleted messages, I don't have that many in my delete box. It
brought back those I had already deleted, a number are highlighted.
Are the two problems related???

Can you telnet to port 25 of the server? If not, the problem is not with
Outlook. Have you verified your pop and smtp server names?

net to port server". How do I do this?

Except your Windows firewall, which is enabled, with no exceptions open,
right?

Since you're using Verizon, I'm going to assume you're using PPPoE - I
personally hate their software, and never ever install it. If you can spare
the minimal expense required to get a cheap & cheerful hardware
firewall/router appliance, go for it - it will probably solve this issue for
you, as well as give you more security from the internet. It will do the
login/authentication to Verizon, for you, so your computer doesn't have to
do, or know, squat about it.

That said, what happens if you manually connect to Verizon, and do as
Kathleen suggested - go to a command prompt (start | run | cmd <enter>), and
type

telnet <full name of Verizon outbound mail server> 25 <enter>

....presuming they don't have you set up to use some alternate port in your
mail account settings?

will have to take look at this advice, perhaps get some tech help.

Not sure what type of firewall to use. I want something good, with
minimal conflicts with AVG and verizon.

You have a firewall built in which will block all inbound traffic.

I was referring to a hardware appliance that can protect both inbound and
outbound, and can do the PPPoE login for you so you don't need to run the
Verizon software on your computer at all.

If you want a software firewall that blocks outbound traffic, you'll need
something else - might post in m.p.security.homeusers for some advice on
that. Good luck!

I don't know of any antivirus program that conflicts with firewalls or the
Verizon internet service.
