New computer, want to transfer Outlook 2007 data

I have tried to transfer my data from one computer to the other. While I have
all my contact information, and all the misc folders have their respective
emails I can't see anything that was stored in the journal. The record is
there, but when I click on the shortcut for the email message I get an error
that a path isin't found. There is a difference in the log ins so I can see
the path difference problem being valid, but how (assuming that I can) can I
fix this to retrieve all of my stuff that was entered into the journal

Describe the process you used to transfer the data and configure it in the
new Outlook.

Brian,

Old machine using Windows XP SP2, Outlook 2007 opened, selected File,
Export, Export to a file, create a file of type Personal Folder File (.pst),
Slected the Personal Folder to export from with Include Subfolders checked.
File created, transferred to Windows Vista machine, Outlook 2007 opened and
File Import from another program or file, type of file Personal Folder File
(.pst), selected the .pst file created on other machine with Do Not Import
Duplicates selected.

Results:

All mail currently in Inbox and other folders that had mail transferred to
them are present and can be opened. Contacts all made it in with no apparent
problems, details and notes all look to be there. Journal appears to have all
information relevant to emails saved to journal, contact assigned to,
categories, etc.

But when I click on the enveleope icon representing an email transferred
into the journal I get the error message that the file path is not valid.

Here's your first mistake. Never export to a PST. You lose data and it's
unnecessary.

Was the old Outlook open or closed when you copied it?
Outlook 2007 opened and File Import from another program or
file, type of file Personal Folder File (.pst), selected the .pst
file created on other machine with Do Not Import Duplicates selected.

Here's your second mistake: never import from a PST. YOu lose data and may
corrupt your mail profile. Importing and exporting are for transferring
Outlook data to and from applications OTHER THAN Outlook. Transferring data
between one Outlook and another involves somply copying the original PST
while Outlook is closed and then configuring the mail profile on the
destination machine to use that PST. See this:

That may be because it's referencing the original PST's path, which you no
longer have. Try going back to the original PST, transferring it correctly,
and reusing it correctly. It may not work, but you'll be guaranteed that
your data will have been transferred intact.

Brian,

As you advised I copied the .pst file from the old machine to the new
machine.

Unfortunately although that is the .pst file that it is pointing to, I still
have the same problem with older e-mails in the journal. I get the error
message saying that the path doesn't exist.

Secondly I have noticed that all new items placed into the journal are
showing with the envelope on the initial screen, but when you click on a
specific email from the journal the detail window opens up with a basic
windows icon, white background with the windows emblem.

Seems like things are worse rather than better. Checked a different user
account, same problem with new journal entries. This account was created on
the new machine, and has had not .pst file changes!

Suggestions?

I'm afraid that since I don't use the journal, I'm out of ideas on that

Brian,

Since both files were named Outlook I took the old file and moved it
somewhere else and renamed it. Then I placed the Outlook.pst file from the
old computer into the directory. After that opened up Outlook, made sure that
File Management still pointed to the default directory and checked contacts
and journal and inbox.

Do you have any suggestions on who to talk to about the icon issue?

Not the correct method. This may be why you're having problems. You are
confising the mail profile. To switch from using one PST as the default to
another, use the Mail applet in Control Panel (with Outlook closed) to add
the second PST to your mail profile, make it the delivery location, then
remove the first PST. Never overwrite a PST with one of the same name or
rename a PST that is part of a mail profile and substitute another with the
original name.

Partial Success, but

Brain, in following your steps we seem to have cleared some of the problems.
I am now able to view a majority of the Journal Entries for previously saved
emails. However a number of them are coming a pop error message that states
"The program used to create this object is MailMsgAtt. That program is not
installed on this computer. To edit this object you must install a program
that can open this object."

In addition; although the Journal Entry when opened still has the envelope
icon for the email, when I click on that it opens to the details and the
generic windows icon with the white background and the Windows colored log.
