New computer, old software

Because of smoke damage from a fire, our insurance company is buying us a
new computer, which will have Windows XP Home. However, Microsoft Office
isn't part of the package, only Microsoft Works. Right now, we have Office
95 and Office 97 for our old computer (Office 95 we only use for Access,
Office 97 for everything else because our version didn't have Access). Will
these old Office programs work with Windows XP home, or do I need to talk to
the insurance company about getting the current Office that will be
compatible?

I'm surprised the insurance company didn't spring for a copy of office. It
costs an additional $100 or so over Works when purchased with a new
computer. If the old computer had Office, so should the new one.

Your old versions of Office will work with XP.

Your old programs will work but if they are OEM licensed
programs that came factory installed you cannot move them
from the old, dead computer. Your insurance company should
cover your loss, including data recovery from the old
computer (see www.drivesavers.com ) and replacement software
as required.

WORKS is not a replacement for OFFICE. You can buy an
upgrade version of OFFICE 2003 and install that, using your
Office 95 or 97 CD as proof of eligibility to upgrade. Be
sure to get a version with all the applications you need.
